Moderator - Kevin O’Brien, HBA ’93
As the President and GM for Weight Watchers in Canada, Kevin O’Brien is responsible for the performance of the Canadian business in pursuit of Weight Watcher’s mission: Inspiring healthy habits for real life.
Prior to joining Weight Watchers in late 2017, Kevin held various executive commercial leadership roles with Aeroplan and Aimia. Kevin joined Aimia after more than 16 years in strategy consulting - most recently as a Managing Partner of the Montreal and Toronto Corporate Consulting offices at SECOR Consulting, Canada’s largest independent strategy consulting company (since acquired by KPMG). Kevin co-founded Diesel Think Tank, a Canadian consulting company focused on closer integration between primary customer research and business strategy.
Kevin holds an HBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University, and is a member of the Ivey Advisory Board. Kevin is also a Board member of the Tarragon Theatre and on the Advisory Council for the DMZ. Kevin currently lives in Toronto, with his wife and their three sons.
Paulo Gomes, HBA '05, MBA '10
Paulo has spent his entire career working with primary care physicians in the EMR and pharmaceutical industry. As an active member of Ontario's healthcare community and as a staunch advocate of our healthcare system, Paulo believes that change is necessary and sees many opportunities to improve and re-allocate resources to improve patient outcomes. Paulo founded DoctorCare in 2011 to help family physicians improve patient care, run better businesses and increase the quality of their own lives. DoctorCare's programs and services focus on enhancing chronic disease management, billing and technology, and clinic workflow helping over 1200 family doctors improve the lives of more than 1.5 million patients. Paulo is currently working in Alberta and Quebec in an effort to replicate DoctorCare's business offerings in these new markets.
Paulo has an HBA and MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University, he is an avid traveler who is passionate about an active lifestyle and eating a plant-based diet.
Peter Kalen, HBA '95, MBA ’01
Peter Kalen is one of Canada’s most seasoned retail credit executives. He brings over 22 years of experience in the credit industry working for companies like Canada Trust, Citibank, PC Financial and Sears Financial, where, as Executive Vice-President of Financial and Home Services, he managed one of Canada’s largest retail credit card operations. Recognizing that retailers and their customers are being vastly underserved by existing POS financing technology and services, Peter founded Flexiti Financial to redefine how we finance consumer purchases from vendors of traditional "big-ticket" products. His strong understanding of the credit industry, and what it takes to drive sales for retailers, has propelled Flexiti Financial’s award-winning POS sales financing platform to one of the leading consumer lending solutions in Canada.
Peter obtained his HBA and MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the American Beethoven Society, and founder of the Peter Kalen Award in Classical Studies at Western University. He lives in Toronto with his wife.
Tim Saunders is a finance executive with international experience in public companies and private equity-backed start-ups. His leadership style focuses on business transformation and forward thinking to advance business capability and the business model. Tim joined Canopy Growth Corporation as the Chief Financial Officer in June 2015. Since joining Canopy, Tim has managed multiple equity financings that have raised over $700 million and directed strategic corporate acquisitions that increased the company’s production capacity, brand strength and global business footprint. In addition, Mr. Saunders facilitated the July 2016 uplisting of the company’s shares to the Toronto Stock Exchange – making Canopy the first cannabis company to be listed on a major global stock exchange and later the first to be on the S&P TSX Index. Prior to joining Canopy, Tim held executive finance positions at Mitel, Zarlink Semiconductor, Vodafone (UK/Czech Republic), Oskar Mobil (Czech Republic) and Plasco Energy Group.
Tim earned his CPA, CA with PricewaterhouseCoopers and is a proud graduate of Bishop’s University (Quebec) where he obtained his BBA. Tim also earned an executive certificate from the Ivey School of Business at Western University.
Jennifer is the Managing Director & Head of Capital Markets at Coinsquare - Canada's largest and most trusted digital currency exchange. Prior to joining Coinsquare, Jennifer was a VP at TD Securities on the Algorithmic Trading team, leading sales and business development across the hedge fund, asset management and institutional sell-side community, in both Canada and the US. She was previously Head of Broker Sales for ITG Canada's dark pool TriAct MATCHNow, a competitor to the TSX. She started her career at Scotia Capital as an Equity Research Associate and subsequently worked as an Analyst on the Private Equity team at Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
In Spring 2017 Jennifer was the only Canadian recognized at New York-based Trader's Magazine and Markets Media, Markets Choice Awards, where she won the Rising Star Award. Jennifer was also the only Canadian nominated in 2017 for Trader's Magazine Women in Finance Award. In early 2017, Jennifer started an initiative of her own, FinForum, which aims to bridge the gap between Toronto fintech firms and traditional financial institutions, hosting one marquee event per year. In 2016 Women in Capital Markets named Jennifer as one of Canada's 2016 Emerging Leaders and later in 2016 she was appointed Co-Chair to launch the NextGen initiative for 100 Women in Finance in Toronto. She is a mentor to students and young professionals, and she is a guest speaker and lecturer at Simon Fraser University, University of Alberta and Queen's University. She is a member of Leadership Sinai at Toronto's Mt. Sinai Hospital, she is a CAIA Charterholder, and she is a graduate of the University of Alberta School of Business, with a major in Finance and minor in Business Economics & Law.
